Here at Resonance, we understand the critical role that women and girls play around the world and how restricting their rights hinders economic and social progress within all sectors, industries and communities. It is for this reason that we operate in a manner that meaningfully and intentionally engage women and girls in our work.
To do so, when initiating new projects and building partnerships, we question:
- How will governing gender norms, roles, and responsibilities impact our programming?
- How will this work reduce existent gaps and barriers for women and girls, as well as provide equitable access to and benefit from our development assistance?
Recognizing the power and potential imbued within women’s voices, inputs, and participation, Resonance attempts to mainstream gender equality in proposed partnerships and technical interventions in any way we can. Today, on International Women’s Day, 2018, we’d like to share a few examples of our efforts to strengthen women’s participation and improve gender equality around the world.
Clean Cook Stoves for Improved Livelihoods – Ghana
Resonance is working with partners to design and apply market development and financing strategies for healthier and more fuel-efficient cook ovens for women fish processors along Ghana’s coast. The clean cook stove movement was created “to save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women, and protect the environment by creating a thriving global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions.” (Global Alliance for Clean Cook Stoves) In Ghana, Resonance works to support the development of a sustainable local market for the improved oven. For the Ghanaian women, the improved oven – called the ahotor oven – emits substantially less and cleaner smoke, is 32% more fuel efficient and produces healthier fish with low PAH levels for consumption.
This initiative is through the USAID/Ghana Sustainable Fisheries Management Project (SFMP), led by the University of Rhode Island. Resonance is working with SNV and other SFMP partners.
Opportunities in Government, Business and Civil Society – Afghanistan
Resonance is working in Afghanistan, to provide 25,000 women with leadership opportunities – the training, mentoring, and capacity building necessary – to become future trailblazers in government, business, and civil society. Resonance is helping to build partnerships that unlock opportunities for employment, professional development, and entrepreneurship for young Afghan women. In addition, we are developing the capacity of the project’s local partnership team to identify, formulate and implement win-win partnerships that support workforce development.
Specific attention is given to ensuring that all Afghan women’s voices, regardless of their socio-economic class, ethnicity, or geographic background, are heard and provided equal opportunity to advance in leadership and decision-making positions within their careers. This activity is shining a light on the reality that the growth, development, and progress of a country cannot be achieved without unlocking the potential, power, and voice of all members of society.
This initiative is part of the USAID Women’s Leadership Development (WLD) Task Order under the PROMOTE IDIQ contract, USAID’s largest-ever investment in women’s empowerment.
The Role of Gender in Countering Violent Extremism – East Africa
Resonance is organizing and facilitating training on countering violent extremism (CVE) in East and West Africa. Using an innovative participatory methodology, Resonance guides United States government staff, development practitioners, and other stakeholders through training on CVE strategies and action planning to implement CVE programming in their communities and projects. To address the growing need to look specifically at the role of women in CVE, Resonance is exploring research and lessons learned, including a previous workshop session in East Africa focused on the “Role of Women in CVE.”
This initiative is facilitated by Resonance and USAID’s Africa Bureau (AFR).

Lastly, we at Resonance recognize that these achievements, from scaling up clean cookstoves in Ghana to recognizing women’s involvement in countering violent extremism, would not be possible without the support and efforts of our staff and partners around the world. Specifically, celebrating Resonance’s overseas female employees including, Doris Owusu in Ghana, Charity Lombe in Zambia, Grace Ngungi in Kenya, Liliana Lopez in El Salvador, Mam Sakulpitakphon and Araya Poomsaringkarn in Thailand, Fini Lovita in Indonesia, and Becky Andong in the Philippines. These women are change makers and game changers, steadfastly dedicated to carrying out our mission of unlocking action-based strategies to solve the world’s toughest challenges. Here at Resonance we will continue to strengthen women’s capacities, from our overseas staff to project beneficiaries, ensuring that they are fully empowered to participate in and contribute to the sustainable development of the world.
